- Massachusetts Requires this Certificate from the Fire Department Upon a Sale or Transfer of a Property
- Requirements for One and Two Family Dwellings can be found in the link below
- In addition to the State Requirements, Everett Fire also requires photoelectric smoke detectors to be mounted inside all bedrooms. They should be located inside the bedroom within two feet of the doorway.
- Inspections may be scheduled by online, email or by telephone at 617-394-2349.
- The fees for Smoke / Carbon Monoxide Detector Inspections are as follows:
$50.00 for a single dwelling unit being sold
$100.00 for two dwelling units being sold
$150.00 for three to five dwelling units being sold
$500.00 for six or more dwelling units
(Note: If you are selling 1 unit in a multi-apartment building, the single dwelling unit fee is applicable. The inspection fees cover both the smoke and carbon monoxide detector inspections) - Payment can be made by bank check or money order (please make checks payable to the City of Everett).
Permit Requirements & Fees
Cutting, Welding and Hot Work
- $50 + the possibility of a Fire Watch / Fire Detail
- Hot Work means and includes any open flame, electrical equipment which may cause sparks, including welding, cutting or spark producing operation
- Fire Detail means a contingent consisting of one firefighter or more, which shall be present during events requiring same, to ensure the safety of lives, the environment, and property from the perils of fire, hazardous materials and/or other causes under the jurisdiction of the Fire Department.
- Fire Watch shall be composed of permanently appointed firefighters taken from the active ranks of the City of Everett Fire Department and are here considered equivalent or equal to a Fire Detail.
- Before a permit is issued, the following must be submitted with permit application: Certificate of Insurance, Workman's comp affidavit, NFPA Hot Works Certificate and a letter from owner of property granting permission for work to be done.
Flammable and Combustible Material Storage (Fluids/Solids/Gases)
- $50
- A License from the City Clerk may also be required
Propane (LP) Gas
- $50 - Installation/Modification to a LP Gas Container (per Tank)
- $50 - Keeping, Removal, Storage or Use of LP Gas of more than 42 Pounds in Aggregate
- A license from the City Clerk may also be required
Fire Alarm Shutdown/Repair/Alteration
- $50 + the possibility of a Fire Watch / Fire Detail
- In accordance with the recently adopted Massachusetts Fire Safety Code, 527 CMR 1.00, all Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Installations need to be filed with Building Department. The Building Department Office is located on the second floor of City Hall, 484 Broadway, Everett MA. HOWEVER, all systems that require a shut down need to be permitted by the Head of the Fire Department.
Sprinkler System Shutdown/Repair/Alteration
- $50 + the possibility of a Fire Watch / Fire Detail
- In accordance with the recently adopted Massachusetts Fire Safety Code, 527 CMR 1.00, all Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Installations need to be filed with Building Department. The Building Department Office is located on the second floor of City Hall, 484 Broadway, Everett MA. HOWEVER, all systems that require a shut down need to be permitted by the Head of the Fire Department.
- Before a permit is issued, the following must be submitted with permit application: Certificate of Insurance, Workman's comp affidavit, Fire Alarm Technician License and a letter from owner of property granting permission for work to be done.
Oil Burner Install/Repair/Alteration
- $50 for Permit, $50 for Inspection: $100 total per unit
- $50 if AST is 275 Gallons or Less (per Tank)
- $100 if AST is 276 Gallons or More (per Tank)
- Each Oil Burner Installed/Repaired/Altered will need a separate permit with a separate fee, however if more than one Oil Burner is being Installed/Repaired/Altered in the same building at the same time, only one total inspection fee may be charged.
- Permit Requirements:
All oil burner/boiler work shall comply with Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Code 527 CMR 1 Chapter 11 and be documented on Department of Fire Services Form FP-056 form 1. This form can be found at the Department of Fire Services web page at: http://www.mass.gov/eopss/docs/dfs/osfm/forms/fp056.pdf
Inspection Requirements:
The Everett Fire Department requires inspections on all work that is conducted upon oil burner/boilers and their appurtenances and the removal/installation of any aboveground/underground oil storage tanks.
For oil burner/boiler installations:
The FP-056 permit shall be submitted to Fire Prevention Office with a check for $50.00. Upon nearing completion of the installation or modification, notify the Fire Prevention Office at 617-394-2349 and request a final inspection. Completing this inspection at this time eliminates a return visit to the site and a fee of $50.00 for a final inspection. The Fire Department must complete this inspection before issuing the permit for fuel storage.
Oil Tank Removal/Installation:
The FP-056 permit shall be submitted to Fire Headquarters with a check for $50.00 before any work is started. Upon nearing completion of the installation/removal or modification, notify the Fire Prevention Office at 617-394-2349 and request a final inspection. Oil tank installation and removal can be documented by (1) contractor on (1) FP-056.

Aboveground Storage Tank (Removal/Install/Repair/Alteration/Inspect Existing)
- Before a permit is issued, the following must be submitted with permit application: Certificate of Insurance, Workman's comp affidavit
Underground Storage Tank Removal
- $50 if AST is 275 Gallons or Less (per Tank)
- $150 if AST is 276 Gallons or More (per Tank)
- A receipt of disposal of underground steel storage tank formerly containing flammable liquids will also be required.
Before a permit is issued, the following must be submitted with permit application: Certificate of Insurance, Workman's comp affidavit.
Food Trucks
- $50 + possible fees associated with a Flammable Materials and/or LP Gas Permit, if required.

False Alarms
- The Fire Chief or his designee is empowered to enforce the following schedule of fees and penalties which shall be assessed to owners of property, to include “absentee landlords” and or persons in possession of property equipped with electronic or battery operated signal systems which detect smoke or fire, who cause or allow such systems to broadcast false alarms due to negligence or failure to maintain such equipment:
- No fee will be charged for the first two responses to alarm activation, where no smoke or fire condition exists, within a one month period. After the first two offenses, fifty dollars ($50) per alarm activation within that one month's span, where no smoke or fire condition exists, shall be charged.
Crowd Manager Information
Grilling Safety
The Everett Fire Department would like to remind the Residents of Everett that barbeque grills using gas or charcoal bricks are NOT PERMITTED above the first floor of ANY building. Electric grills have no open flame and can be used instead. The storage of propane gas containers inside or above the 1st floor of a building used for habitation is also prohibited. Grills are also prohibited in enclosed porches.
Grill Fire Facts
Between 2012 and 2016, there were 487 fires reported to the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System (MFIRS) involving grills, hibachis and barbecues. These incidents caused 22 civilian injuries, three firefighter injuries, and $4.5 million in property damage.
Grill Fire Safety
- Read and follow the owner’s manual.
- Always grill outdoors.
- Place grills 10 feet away from the house. Make sure they are not under eaves, overhanging branches or against the side of the building.
- Propane barbecues may be used on open (no roof) first floor porches, decks or patios of single family homes, and only if the deck is less than 12 feet above grade level, is non-combustible and has an exterior stairway to the ground or at ground level. Grills should still be 10 feet from the house and away from deck railings.
- Grills should never be used indoors or on fire escapes.
- Keep children and pets three feet away from the grill area. Create a circle of safety.
- Never leave a grill burning unattended.
- Keep the grill clean by removing grease or fat build-up from the grills and trays below the grill.
- If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
- If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait 15 minutes before relighting.
- Never use gasoline on any grill!
OUTDOOR FIRE PITS, OUTDOOR FIREPLACES AND CHIMINEAS
These devices have gained popularity over the past several years, and they come in many shapes and sizes. These are considered recreational fires and are to be used in accordance with 527 CMR 1, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, and all other rules, regulations and city ordinances.
- Recreational fires shall NOT be located within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials including decks, fences, vegetation and any overhead obstruction, including tree branches.
- These fires are to be fueled by CLEAN firewood.
- The burning of refuse, trash or similar materials is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
- Recreational fires shall be CONSTANTLY ATTENDED by a COMPETENT PERSON until such fire has been extinguished.
- Individual MUST have a garden hose connected to the water supply readily available for use.
- All fires shall be CONTAINED WITH APPLICABLE SCREENS/SPARK ARRESTORS.
- If any burning creates a NUISANCE, condition of AIR POLLUTION or becomes a HAZARD, the head of the Fire Department shall order that the condition be REMEDIED/ DISCONTINUED.
